Council on Vascular Ultrasound


The Council on Vascular Ultrasound is now accepting applications/nominations for open Council Steering Committee positions.  The role of the Steering Committee is to oversee all Council activities.

The deadline for submission of applications/nominations is March 16, 2018.

Open Positions for Council on Vascular Ultrasound Steering Committee, beginning June 2018 (immediately following ASE’s Scientific Sessions) include:

  • Two (2) Member at Large- 2 yr. term, eligible for a second 2 yr. term

Criteria for Serving on a Council Steering Committee:

  • Active voting member of ASE (membership dues paid through 2018)
  • Candidates with FASE designation are preferred but not required
  • Candidate should have interest and experience in vascular ultrasound
  • Candidates should have time to participate in Council meetings (1 face to face) and quarterly conference calls
  • Positions are open to members in all ASE membership categories except IRT or industry-affiliated members (full or part-time employees in non-medical settings)

Process for Application/Nomination to Serve on the Council Steering Committee:

1)   Candidates who meet the criteria outlined above may nominate themselves with a letter of interest; or members may be nominated by their peers (any nominee should be advised they are being nominated prior to submitting the nomination)

2)   At least one letter of support is required with a self-nomination (maximum of 3 letters)

3)   Candidates are requested to complete the ASE Volunteer Self-Assessment Form

4)   Candidates are requested to submit a current CV or resume

5)    All volunteers are required to complete an annual disclosure statement.

6)   Letters of intent or nomination, letters of support, and CV or resume should be emailed to or mailed to ASE, c/o Council Steering Committee Nominations, 2530 Meridian Parkway, Suite 450, Durham, NC  27713.  The ASE Volunteer Self-Assessment form is submitted online.  The deadline for submission is March 16, 2018.

7)   Applications/nominations will be reviewed by the Council Nominating Task Force in March or April 2018.   The Nominating Task Force will present a slate of officers and directors for approval by ASE’s President in April.

8)   Candidates will be notified in April or May 2018.

9)   Elected candidates will assume office in June 2018.


  • Council Chair (ladder position) – Each Council will have a chair, approved by the ASE’s President, to serve for two years*. This person will serve as a voting member on ASE’s Board of Directors during his/her tenure as Chair.
  • Council Chair-Elect (ladder position)
  • Immediate Past Council Steering Committee Chair (final ladder position) – to provide mentorship
  • Scientific Sessions Track Chair
  • Scientific Sessions Track Co-Chair
  • Council representative appointed to the Education Committee
  • Council representative appointed to the Guidelines & Standards Committee
  • Two to three at large members from the specialty area (Each council to tailor member-at-large type (e.g., allied health professional, early career, surgeon, etc. to reflect their specific needs)
  • Ex-officio – Council Representative on ASE Executive Committee



The ASE Council on Vascular Ultrasound was founded in 2007 and is dedicated to representing and advancing quality in vascular ultrasound imaging.

 Council Objectives include:

  • Support vascular ultrasound interest areas by communicating issues of importance to the membership;
  • Provide guidance to the ASE Board of Directors regarding vascular ultrasound;
  • Provide a forum for members with similar interests to network;
  • Provide a representative (council chairman) to ASE Board of Directors;
  • To provide educational offerings for those practicing cardiovascular ultrasound for vascular patients, including guidance to Scientific Sessions Program Committee
  • To provide guidance on standards of care related to vascular ultrasound to the Board and Guidelines and Standards Committee

  • Targeted track at ASE Scientific Sessions instructing how to perform vascular ultrasound, review clinical cases, and understand risk assessment in the practice of primary prevention

2018 Scientific Sessions Travel Grant Application Window is Open!

The ASE Education and Research Foundation plans to sponsor two vascular ultrasound trainees (physician student or sonographer) to attend the 29th ASE Annual Scientific Sessions in Nashville, TN, June 22-26, 2018.  This travel grant is part of an effort by the ASE’s Council on Vascular Ultrasound Steering Committee to encourage physician trainees in cardiovascular specialties to focus on the field of vascular ultrasound, to encourage sonographers with an interest in vascular imaging, and to recruit enthusiastic new members to the Vascular Ultrasound Council. Students in an ultrasound training program, residents and fellows in vascular surgery, cardiovascular medicine, and vascular medicine may apply. All sonographers with strong interest in vascular ultrasound are also invited to apply. To apply for the $1000 travel grant please submit your CV, a cover letter describing why you desire to attend the ASE Scientific Sessions, plus a letter from either your training program director or vascular lab director in support of your application. Applicants must be a member of ASE. Previous recipients of an ASE Travel Grant are not eligible to apply. Application deadline is April 1, 2018. Submissions should be sent to Natalya Read at

Vascular Abstract Award given to best Vascular Abstract at Scientific Sessions:

Julia E. Herr, MSc presented her work “ Carotid Plaque Composition by Gray Scale Mapping is Predictive of Coronary Artery Disease and 5 Year Cardiovascular Outcomes” at the conference and was selected as the 2017 Vascular Abstract Winner. Julia Herr is with Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
