An integral component of ASE’s educational meetings is the presentation of original research on the latest advances in cardiovascular ultrasound. Donations made to Research Investigator Support allow the ASE Foundation to fund the Brian Haluska Sonographer Research Award Competition, which recognizes non-physicians who served as the primary investigator on their project of original research.

ASE will host its 30th Annual Scientific Sessions, June 21-25, 2019, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. The sessions have been specifically designed to provide superb education and clinical integration on cutting-edge technology like 4D imaging, multimodality imaging, the use of artificial intelligence, strain, and the use of echocardiography in heart failure, assessment of valve disease, and cardio-oncology. In addition, the conference will highlight the exponential growth in the scope of the field with a focus on point of care ultrasound, along with vascular, perioperative, and pediatric advances. ASE announced its ASE Cares campaign earlier this week. This campaign was conceived by incoming ASE President, Madhav Swaminathan, MD, FASE, to provide wellness initiatives, including both physical and virtual resources, for ASE members. A Task Force, led by Erin Michos, MD, FASE, has been established to provide guidance on best practices, resources, position statements, and advocacy on these issues for our members. The goal of this campaign is to promote the well-being of all cardiovascular ultrasound professionals in their communities, identify and respond to emerging well-being challenges, and foster opportunities for social connection. Valvular regurgitation is a prevalent cardiac disorder, in which one or more of the heart’s valves “leak,” often leading to extra burdens on the heart muscle and requiring treatment. Catheter-based interventions to treat Valvular Heart Disease (VHD) have increased over the past few years with the advent of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), edge-to-edge mitral valve repair, and other investigative devices to repair or replace diseased valves. Guidelines to assess the results of these interventions are lacking , but a new document, Guidelines for the Evaluation of Valvular Regurgitation After Percutaneous Valve Repair or Replacement: A Report from the American Society of Echocardiography Developed in Collaboration with the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Japanese Society of Echocardiography, and Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, provides a resource to guide clinicians in best practices for approaching valvular regurgitation after repair or replacement of a valve. This document supplements the previously published guideline Recommendations for Evaluation of Prosthetic Valves with Echocardiography and Doppler Ultrasound. Read more here.

ASE Past President, Neil J. Weissman, MD, FASE, from MedStar Health, Washington D.C., has been named as this year’s recipient of ASE’s Mentorship Award. The Mentorship Award recognizes a senior physician or sonographer who has demonstrated exceptional mentorship within ASE. The Mentorship Award specifically acknowledges individuals who help younger members advance within our Society and thus cultivated ASE’s future leaders. Dr. Weissman is being honored for his work as Chair of the Governance Taskforce which initiated the first ASE Leadership Academy to mentor rising leaders and his active and ongoing tutelage of other Society leaders.

Dr. Weissman will be recognized as the ASE Mentorship Award Recipient during the Awards Presentations and Edler Lecture Plenary Session on Saturday, June 22, at ASE 2019 in Portland, OR.

Join ASE Past President Susan E. Wiegers, MD, FASE, on Tuesday, May 7 from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM ET for a live webinar as she reviews the recently published Advanced Training Statement on Echocardiography. Dr. Wiegers served as Co-chair of the document and will use this expertise to cover the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 training, the requirements for a Level 3 training program, and the flexibility within those programs. Topics covered will include the concept of competency based education and evaluation, the minimum recommended procedural numbers, and the pathway for training in three or four years. General cardiovascular program directors, echo training directors, trainees, and recent graduates will learn the updated recommendations to achieve Level 3 competence in Echo. Registration is FREE for anyone who wants to participate in this event.
